Getting started.
How do I start my first scouting session?
Open SpudScout, tap the Scout tab at the bottom, then tap + New Session. Give the field a name, capture GPS if you're in the field, pick the grower and growth stage, then start adding observations. Disease, insect, weed, agronomic, and field-issue records all live inside the same session.
Does SpudScout work offline?
Yes. Every part of the app — the Disease Guide, scouting sessions, and reports — works without a cell signal. Photos and GPS are captured locally and stored on-device. The only thing that needs connectivity is exporting a report by email.
What devices and iOS versions are supported?
SpudScout is a universal iOS app. It runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later, and is optimised for iOS 26. There is no Android version at this time.
How many fields and sessions can I create?
Unlimited on the Pro subscription. There are no per-field, per-observation, or per-photo caps — the only limit is the storage on your device.
Subscriptions & billing.
How much does SpudScout Pro cost?
Two options, both with a 14-day free trial:
- Annual — $99.99/year ($8.33/month equivalent)
- Monthly — $14.99/month
Both plans unlock every feature. The annual plan saves 44% versus paying monthly.
Can I try Pro before paying?
Yes — every new subscription starts with a 14-day free trial. You won't be charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel any time during the trial from the App Store with no charge.
How do I cancel my subscription?
All subscriptions are managed through your Apple ID. On your iPhone or iPad:
- Open the Settings app and tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Choose SpudScout and tap Cancel Subscription
Your Pro features stay active until the end of the current billing period.
I was charged but Pro features aren't unlocked.
Can I get a refund?
All purchases are processed through Apple, which handles refund requests directly. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com within 90 days of purchase to request one.
Features & usage.
How do I attach photos to an observation?
Inside any observation, tap the camera icon to take a new photo, or the gallery icon to pick from your photo library. You can attach multiple photos per observation. They're stored on-device alongside the rest of the session.
Can I export reports as PDF or CSV?
Yes. From the Reports tab, choose a session or season summary and tap the share icon. You'll get options for branded PDF (great for growers) and CSV (for data work in Excel or Numbers). Reports can be emailed, AirDropped, or saved to Files.
How is GPS location used?
GPS is captured only when you tap the location button on a session. SpudScout uses Apple's reverse-geocoding to give you a human-readable description, and pins each session on the field map. Location data never leaves your device. You can disable Location Services for SpudScout at any time in iOS Settings.
How does the Disease Guide work?
The guide ships with 25+ catalogued diseases and physiological disorders — symptoms, disease cycle, management notes, and look-alikes — organised by category. It's searchable, fully offline, and free for everyone (no subscription required).
Troubleshooting.
GPS isn't capturing — what should I check?
Open iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, make sure it's on, then scroll to SpudScout and confirm it's set to "While Using the App". If you're indoors or under heavy canopy, GPS can take 10–20 seconds to acquire a fix — give it a moment.
The app crashed and I'm worried about my data.
Photos aren't attaching to my observations.
Check that SpudScout has Camera and Photos permission in iOS Settings. Set Photos access to Full Access (or "Selected Photos" plus the photos you want to attach). If permissions look right, restart the app — that resolves most attachment issues.
How do I delete all my scouting data?
You can delete individual sessions, fields, or observations from inside the app. To wipe everything, delete the SpudScout app from your home screen — iOS removes all locally-stored data with it. This cannot be undone, so export any reports you want to keep first.
My data isn't syncing between iPhone and iPad.
SpudScout stores data locally on each device — sessions captured on your iPhone don't automatically appear on your iPad. iCloud sync is on our roadmap. For now, export reports from one device and import or share them as needed.
